Tencent, the company behind the blockbuster social app, WeChat has announced Thursday that the Symbian version is now available. The mobile app is particularly available in Nokia’s Asha series, Nokia X3 and Nokia C3-01. Please check the download link after the break.
WeChat Short Overview
WeChat is a web and mobile social application owned by the Chinese company Tencent. The app supports multiple platforms including iOS, Android, Windows Phone, Blackberry and the currently announced platform, Symbian. There’s also a web version of the app that users can use if they are using PC.
WeChat was first launched in 2011 in China where in a year it managed to hold at least 100 million users. It has sought to have a huge potential by critics that other existing and leading platforms as well as telco companies in the country such as Sino Weibo and China Mobile are threatened for taking a slice of revenues.
It has always been a good point for Tencent to put WeChat app as free although due to its highly increasing number of users, it sought to cause a lot of bandwidth issues that servers might have difficulty to handle such huge requests from all users. WeChat as of 2013 has about 300 million registered users and the number keeps increasing yet the app and service use remains free.
Update: Tech In Asia today reports that WeChat has now 50 million users outside China. Overall, the company said that there are at least 195 million active users using the social app each month.
Because WeChat has been consistently becoming a new popular platform for messaging, Tencent sought that it would likely gain more users in the international scene. I guess that vision didn’t fail as WeChat has been reportedly to have 40 million users globally, with users mainly coming from Asia.
The app as seen on its official website has currently holding 11 Facebook Fan Page accounts each one is dedicated to a particular country including Hong Kong, Malaysia, Turkey, Taiwan, Indonesia, Argentina, India Vietnam, Australia, Thailand and Singapore.
Popularity in the Philippines
Since it appeared in a TV commercial in the Philippines, WeChat has spread like a wildfire, quickly becoming yet another grapevine for social media butterfly to connect with friends and even meet strangers. I am seeing a status about it at least twice a day in my FB stream and it’s not holding back.
